Valor Oil’s Hop Shops Draw Customers in with a Unique Attraction

/

operates 15 Hop Shop convenience stores and is in the process of building its first truck stop from the ground up. The company is investing $2 million in the truck stop, which is in Owensboro, Kentucky. It will sit on about 15 acres and feature a 9,500-square-foot store along with 120 parking spaces.

The newest location will also feature something Hop Shop has become known for—its disco bathrooms.

Hop Shop’s mascot is a mischievous frog named Hopper, and he warns customers not to push the red button in the bathroom. “If you push the red button, that is when the disco starts,” said .

The bathrooms have gone viral, garnering more than 250 million views on social media. “We did the first one two years ago and kept expanding those. We have six now,” Dupin said, adding that the bathrooms have been featured on late-night television shows with Seth Meyers and Conan O’Brien and on the Bob and Tom Show. “We even hosted a wedding in one.”

One thing that will be different at the newest location is that it will feature a disco bathroom and a regular restroom so those in a hurry aren’t hindered by customers stopping to take selfies.

Even though this will be the company’s first truck stop, Valor Oil isn’t new to serving truckers and knows that speed is critical for professional drivers. “With the c-stores, we still get trucks and have big ones that come in,” Dupin said. “We have two truck plazas at our convenience stores where we have showers, some trucking items for sale, and DEF and fuel out on separate fuel islands.”

The new location will offer a variety of food options, including along with a branded pizza option, a proprietary Mexican offering and fresh foods.

Valor Oil has been a member of NACS for almost 20 years and turned to 鶹ɫ when venturing into the truck stop space. “We wanted the expertise on the truck stop side like they have on the c-store side,” Dupin said.

Valor Oil has plans to expand and ultimately wants to have at least 50 stores in the next four years. Dupin said the company is still determining the exact mix of c-stores and truck stops.
